The church was built in the 1870s when the town of Millom grew rapidly, following the discovery of a rich seam of haematite ore. It is an impressive building with a long nave, a north aisle, in which refreshments are now served, and a spacious chancel, the whole, surmounted by a tall spire, visible for miles around.
The north wall houses the Norman Nicholson window, designed and installed by Cumbrian artist, Christine Boyce in 2000. Norman Nicholson, our local poet, was a regular worshipper at St George’s Church and is buried in the churchyard. The richly coloured window includes images and lines from his poems.
The church has a robed choir and is developing a team of bell ringers. The monthly all age service, All Together, is held here on the first Sunday of each month at 11am and is followed by lunch. The church stages the community Christmas Tree Festival with a magnificent display of trees decorated by local groups and schools. Being centrally situated and our largest church, St George’s hosts the annual Service of Remembrance. It is also used as a venue for concerts.
The church is normally open every day. To check for access, contact Geoff Brunskill on 01229 772622 or email: scousegeoff@talktalk.net The church is situated on a hill in the centre of Millom. Its postcode is LA18 4JE.
